right, so... Starhead.
...we've got a song on the new compilation put together by our buddies over at Strawberry Fields - who are freshly moved into their new digs!
The song is "Coda", which'll be on Escadrille, and until the Strawberry Fields comp comes out, it'll be up on the
Escadrille is being mixed by Brent Best right now, then it'll zoom up to Chicago to be mastered by Carl Saff.
Yeah, we're pretty happy.
man, we've gotten louder, tho.
We've kinda posted 'Coda' before, but this version of it is the first 'release' with all 7 members together on it.
Cody plays TWO e-bows onnit at the same time, and yeah, that's a church bell yer hearin in there.
Brent had this big fuck-all old iron bell on his porch, all hundred pounds of it, and, well...
"Two e-bows and a church bell? It is country?"
"Depends on the country, i guess..."

so, yer sittin around, wondering what the best, most romantic little song is right now,
and i hear you:
at shows, i ply Brent, trading spirits for the spiritual, whiskey for words, like some demented sonic Apache at the edge of an imaginary fence to mark his wind-walled world, rebuilding my White Mountain brick by eroded brick,
and then i sit back, as quiet as a notwolf can be sometimes, licking the salt from my glass, being bitten lovingly by icy lime and dead cactus dreams
sucking burning perique
not thinking about it
or it
or
it
but inside i sing this at the top of my stupid lungs, pushing it up up over up into clouds so they might fill and rain it on me later, as fickle as a petulant lover
hopefully while hearthiking, when my earth is bakedhothardflat and there's no true shade
and i am a pilgrim, i am that gypsy, and i try to stay in sight of those clouds, yanno, just in case...

Some nights i feel the night, in my lungs, in my hands, in my eyes like orphaned tears
some nights i taste absent salt and roses, sometimes my tongue bites itself and my hands wait
like kids at a winter bus stop
some nights i hold Jemmy and marvel at how far i've moved with her as my crutch, up and down stairs, on the escalator of emotion and the wonder of fear - and the fear in wonder,
tho that taste can be hotsmoothsweet, like buttermint...
some nights i go silly,
wonder if i stretch up high enough, if i can hold that Texas sky like a dark blue blanket, and keep the sun in his nap
and i stretch
and stretch
and stretch, hearing my bones creak like masts in the daybreeze of the highest noon, when the air so hot it wants to be cool again, it remembers, but it only knows how to be hot, beating the ocean like a rug on a line
and in that breeze
my heart moves like sails
beating against itself
flailing about to catch the wind
that'll move me
before those sails tear
again
"There are times that walk from you like some passing afternoon
Summer warmed the open window of her honeymoon
And she chose a yard to burn but the ground remembers her
Wooden spoons, her children stir her Bougainvillea blooms
There are things that drift away like our endless, numbered days
Autumn blew the quilt right off the perfect bed she made
And she's chosen to believe in the hymns her mother sings
Sunday pulls its children from their piles of fallen leaves
There are sailing ships that pass all our bodies in the grass
Springtime calls her children 'till she let's them go at last
And she's chosen where to be, though she's lost her wedding ring
Somewhere near her misplaced jar of Bougainvillea seeds
There are things we can't recall, blind as night that finds us all
Winter tucks her children in, her fragile china dolls
But my hands remember hers, rolling 'round the shaded ferns
Naked arms, her secrets still like songs I'd never learned
There are names across the sea, only now I do believe
Sometimes, with the windows closed, she'll sit and think of me
But she'll mend his tattered clothes and they'll kiss as if they know
A baby sleeps in all our bones, so scared to be alone"

"and when did you become this way?
and how it starts is a cliche
why do you stay
holed up yeah fading
i pray that you don't fade away
and music never has a chance
with your queasy medicated dance
defiant in stance
cooped up, yeah and you're insolent
a self-inflicted circumstance
when you're tired the world sleeps with you
when you're drunk it spins just the same
when you're high it rises to meet you
when you're sad, it never feels the pain
a simple salve you once believed
a reactive commonality
but it gets hard to breathe
and those days have crumbled
now pre-emption is the policy
when you're tired the world sleeps with you
when you're drunk it spins just the same
when you're high it rises to meet you
but when you're sad, it never feels the pain
there's nothing left now to retrieve
and what is this that you've achieved
and who could believe
such creeping cruel darkeness
floundering in false reprieve
when you're tired the world sleeps with you
when you're drunk it spins just the same
when you're high it rises to meet you
when you're sad, it never feels the pain
when you're tired the world sleeps with you
when you're drunk it spins just the same

EXCERPTS:
Song of Solomon 8:8
"We have a young sister, and her boobs are not yet grown. What shall we do for our sister on the day she is spoken for? Should we feed her lamb's lard?"
Ezekiel 16:7
"You grew up and developed and became the most beautiful of jewels. Your boobs were formed and your hair grew, you who were naked and bare in need of no lamb's lard."
Ezekiel 23:3
"In that land their boobs were fondled and their virgin boobs caressed as they fed on lamb's lard."
reflection:
my bible has a blue denim cover embroidered with a presentation of brown and yellow celery and a zipper that runs around it holding back a great, zepplin-sized penis. if i unzip my bible, it tells me to ask it to smack me with the penis.
i do ask. i get cock-smacked accordingly. i deserved this--i asked for it after all. zionists might know this better as the purifying action called a "good shlonging" or a "shlong-down". once this is done, i ask my bible to tell the penis to tell me i am loved, tell me that i'm not alone, etc. renew myself.
meanwhile, and all during this, there's a vagina burning in an on-fire nest of cinnamon twigs:
it dies. a new vagina is born. the new vagina makes the ashes "from whence it came" into a clustery ball. the new vagina labors many more days and nights encasing the orb in a crunchy, egg-shaped shell made of myrrh it will then deposit in the fortress city of heliopenis.
this happens every lifetime.
it happens for you and me, everyone.
it's all true. i read that much.

The Fabulous Badasses right, first the name, there's a hint and a half for yer ass. K? lessee, i think if the Jesus Lizard fucked Urge Overkill and made the kids grow up at a zoo on a space station, this is the kinds of band they'd make to get free candy and booze from the other poor bastards up there with them. This is what it sounds like if "metal" were 'good'. Churning and melodic and heavy and tasty tasty tasty.
History At Our Disposal - Beck loves Led Zeppelin, and they hang out at the pool at the woman's college playing Aphex Twin and radiohead on a boombox, and the girls dun mind. Not a bit.
The Paper Chase - this is the most high-energy depressing band i've ever seen in my life. The first time i saw 'em, they did a cover of a Roger Waters song fom The Pros & Cons of Hitchhiking ( mebbe my fave album ever, btw...), and i was hooked like when Kim Sweeney dared me to lick her bare nipple in the 9th grade. If you could just get yer head or yer heart drunk seperately, not at the same time, this'd be the stuff to listen to while you were walking home, revelling in yer abandon.

Meet some more of my friends & neighbors, wontcha?
( more under the tag "denton rock city". if you like it, tell them...)
Audrey Lapriak - she's just recently started doing it with a band behind her, and what a band it is! RTB2, plus Ryan Williams? Frack. Audrey is a lot like if Ani DiFranco werenae such a damn whiny yankee. Her songs are sharp little bits of your life, minus everything hard and plastic - even the good hard or plastic things. And her voice? If a butterfly could sing long enough to ask for it's 5th beer, this is the voice it'd use. Check out the song "projector", it's amazing.
Chris Welch, as one of the singer/songwriters of the band Pinebox Serenade, and the Big ol' Bastards and The Lads. yeh'd think he has his big ol arms full, but he still manages to hold down a full-time real job, treat his incredible woman right, and breakout some solo stuff here and there. Chris would sit nicely between Johnny Cash & Tom Waits on yer CD shelf. Yeah, pretty much like that.
Dokodemo Doa - and in completely the opposite direction, this is some Denton etherrock/darkwave, tho yeh'd never know they were from here. A healthy dose of some Dresden Dolls sound with some 30-octive vocals. If Kate Bush were stationed on Galactica, this is what she'd listen to to stay sane. (vocalist Sarah is also in starhead...)
Pinebox Serenade, well, imagine if alla yer rock buddies, alla yer punks and crusties, yer grungers and a no-waver or two all got together and made a country band. Like Social D without the sneering, like Lucero without the tight-pants trouble.
centro-matic - wait, do you really not know who these guys are? Please throw away your radio. This is the REM of Denton. ...and nice guys, too; Will & Scotty got us in touch with Jason Molina ( who wrote 'Lioness"). Tho Scotty Danbom cannae make a margerita worth a shit, i still heart him.

and late at night i get kinda useless on here, so...
meh.
meet some more of my friends & neighbors, then:
SuperLoveAttack - this is one of those 'phantom' bands that frequent this town. With so many musicians in so many things, it's inevitable that things move in tides. Superloveattack is one of those bands: undeniable, but often intangible. This music is sharp candy indie rock rooted in the 90's indie orgy. Yum.
Spitfire Tumbleweeds - k, so, yeh know waht a jackalope is? Imagine if one were Sith.
Hogpig - More big rock, but not dumb. A little classic, a little red, a lot loudcrunchyhard. Yeh hear about bands that yeh have t'see live t'get 'it'. Yeah, this was one. They say they've called it quits, but it's too much fun to drop.
Hand of Onan - Songs like "Tatergun", and "Who Stole Baby Jesus"? This is Motorhead from a trailer park that no tornado would dare cross.
The Angelus - Nick Cave is Faith & Morrisey is The Muse; only bigger, longer, louder.
as always, more under my 'denton rock city' tag.

but, i digress!
Hey, these are my friends:
( well met)
Delphi is the bastard daughter of Tori Amos and Lee Harvey Oswald, stealing homework from Buffy Summers, and spending off weekends with her 'uncle' Art Bell. Plus she's hot, if yeh like girls that can totally kick yer ass. Hail Eris, and swallow.
Jetscreamer - well, fuck. What can i say about the band i took my band's name from? Sonic Youth from Texas? Hard as buckets? The sexiest CD you never thot you'd like? Yes, yes, and yes. Electric Estatic Experimental Egression/Erosion Earfist: drink it, smoke it, stick it in.
The Undoing of David Wright - Neo/New Wave Glittertrash Rock with the grand tradition of Gang of Four, mebbe some Stooges, or if Joy Division had heard of Red Bull. Think Velvet Oilmine...
Current Leaves - Kinda recently called it quits, but, typical of Denton, they're all still doin stuff. This is like Graham Parsons hanging out with Big Star, which isnae a bad thing at all.
wild in the streets - k, so, not a 'band', but she's everywhere the good bands are. See, Ms Lisa isnae afraid t'go deep in any crate for motown, or Bowie, or glamtastic pre-disco, or old Stax, whatever feels good... And she delves songs so familiar, but somehow forgotten, that they appeal to the lizard ( read: don't think: DANCE!) parts of yer brain, without all the fucking foam bombs and mall-ternative trashamite bitches slingin attitude and sharpening their fakey bits. All i wanna do is zooma zoom zoom anna drink drink. Shake yer Shiner's!
more? tagged 'denton rock city'. and, as always, if yeh like it, tell THEM.
